Balfour Beatty E&M managed to achieve an excellent "Zero Accident" rate for its tower refurbishment term contracts with Hongkong Electric Company and was presented the Good Safety Performance Award in May 2005.
"Safety is always our priority. With the dedicated efforts, all works were completed ahead of schedule and to the satisfaction of the Client," says Alan Gibson.
BBE&M has been involved in these contracts from the year of 2000 - 2005. During the period, condition assessment was conducted on 25 towers and 23 towers were refurbished in four different phases to suit the outage programme.
On some of the towers, the main legs had to be replaced which required the existing conductors to be lowered and adjacent towers backstayed. The working team had to adopt special methods to anchor the conductors to ground to fulfill the local government requirements to minimise the disturbance of existing vegetation within the Country Parks.
Special erection derricks were used to dismantle sections of the tower and replace new members. Helicopters were used to fly in all equipment and materials. Existing earthpeaks were removed using helicopters and new pre-assembled earthpeaks were flown into positions.
